During the month of Elul, I’m sharing a few stories I haven’t shared before to a large audience. This is one of my approaches this year to prepare myself for the Yamim Noraim, the Days of Awe. You can read about it in Vayikra (Leviticus) 23:23–32.

The Days of Awe starts with Yom Teruah, Feast of Trumpets, better known as
Rosh Hashanah, Jewish New Year and finalizes on Kippur (also named Yom Kippur, Day of Atonement). In the month of Elul, the month before  Rosh Hashanah,we prepare by having a spiritual 'clean-up'. We clean ourselves through thorough introspection and teshuvah (repentance) from different kinds of personal and emotional heaviness. In the spirit of the Days of Awe I'd like to share a personal story.

The first Jurassic Park movie was released 24 years ago. I was 15 years old in the month of June 1993, in the Hebrew month Sivan or Tammuz 5753. The manner the film was promoted it promised to become the blockbuster movie of the year. A friend of mine knew some other girls and with a group of eight we would go to see Jurassic Park. Two of these girls stated they would be the ones to place the reservation. However, when the evening came to see the movie and we arrived at the movie theater, only six tickets were booked. The two girls promised to place the reservation for all eight of us gave a very lame excuse. So my friend and I stood outside the movie theater while the rest of the group was already inside the building.

Out of nowhere a man came running towards us and gave two tickets to a small boy who was standing right in front of us and ran away. I remember running after the man but when I passed the corner of the movie theater I stood on a parking lot (with only a few cars present) but the man was gone. Not even in the distance could I see the man again, as if he disappeared into thin air!

I walked back and guess what, it turned out that this kid received two tickets from this man for Jurassic Park for that evening and time frame that we planned to see the movie! He didn’t know what to do with it but my friend and I did of course. We asked him if he would be so kind to give those tickets to us and he did.

When we arrived in the designated auditorium the other girls were very puzzled and jealous that we somehow managed to get a ticket. How we got it we kept secret.

After the movie my friend and I took leave of the other girls. We walked away together and reasoned that the Almighty had probably send an angel to give those tickets to us.

Baruch ata Adonai, Eloheinu Melech HaOlam, hatov hameitiv.

Blessed are you Adonai, Our God, King of the Universe, who is good and causes good!

I wish you all a very meaningful and thorough preparation for the Yamim Noraim, the Days of Awe!
